Like countless people, I watched in horror the other evening as the true extent of the Haiti earthquake became apparent. It would have been a cruel blow for any country to have to endure a quake of this magnitude but for one that already saw 95% of its population living in poverty; it really was a cruel act of nature. In the aftermath of the quake disaster mitigation is highly important and a number of countries have already sent aid and assistance to the disaster zone. The speed of the disaster mitigation will be highly crucial to provide relief for the survivors of the quake. Emergency food packs and fresh water supplies will be vitally important to ensure that more casualties aren`t lost due the after-effects of the earthquake. Around the world there are countless countries that are in need of humanitarian aid and research into how best these countries can be helped is being carried out by humanitarian logistics companies. They often act as representatives for the countries in need because many have none of their own. Areas of work covered by the consultancies vary and they range from agricultural projects to water sanitation schemes. Countries like Haiti that have been blighted by a cruel act of nature will be praying that the disaster mitigation helps them to get back on their feet in the shortest amount of time.
